Those Who Call Upon the Name of the Lord Shall Be SavedI am a retired professor. I was baptized in the Ming River of Fu-Kiang, China. In the past fifty years, I have been quite occupied with my work and my family, and have not been able to pursue the spiritual life as much as I would like to. However, I thank God that He placed me in the local church in His mercy and loving-kindness that I can daily follow the steps of the Lord Jesus in this heavenward journey. Witness Lee shared a message on calling on the name of the Lord in a conference in Taiwan in the 70s. He shared that we can give thanks in all things, and call on the name of the Lord at all times, for if we call on the name of the Lord from the depths of our being, our heart turns to the Lord spontaneously. Our spirit can touch the Lord and enjoy the Lord with His all-sufficient supply. Ever since that conference, I have been practicing calling on the Lord's name. I call on the Lord's name several times before Bible reading and prayer to quiet my heart and let my spirit open fully to the Lord. I also call on the Lord's name in every difficult situation so that I can handle it with a sober mind and complete dependence on the Lord. I have practiced and experienced this simple spiritual exercise many times to the great help of my spiritual life. I would like to share with you a practical example. I have a quick temperament which can easily cause offenses. It is easier for me to exercise more self-control among strangers. However, it is more difficult to restrain my temper at home. My children are all grown and have already left home. Since my wife and I are the only two left at home, it is easy to get into verbal combat with a cold war lasting for one to two days after the conflict. However, the situation has changed completely since we started practicing calling on the name of the Lord. For example, I was gardening in the backyard the other day and asked my wife to bring a large bag to put away the leaves. However, she did not respond even after three calls. Then I yelled, Why does this take you so long? This provoked her to yell back, Don't you see I am busy right now? Her response started an alarm in me to call, Oh, Lord Jesus, oh, Lord, Jesus. Because of this calling I was brought back to my spirit, in touch with the Lord. My wife, upon hearing my calling, had the same response to call on the Lord as well, and she quietly brought the bag to me. Our small conflict was thus resolved. This is my experience on calling on the name of the Lord, and I warmly invite you to try calling on His name. Hung-Nian Wang | Back to List |
